A cowboy hat is more than something you wear. It tells a story. It shows your personality. And when it’s made by hand, it becomes a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
In the video below, you’ll step inside Law Dog Hat Company, where master hat maker Randy Raines has spent more than 35 years creating handcrafted custom cowboy hats. From shaping raw felt to making sure every hat fits perfectly, you’ll see what goes into making a hat that’s built just for one person.
Watch the video below to see the custom hat-making process from start to finish.
Every Custom Cowboy Hat Starts with an Artist
When you walk through the doors of Law Dog Hat Company, you’re not just entering a hat shop. You’re stepping into an artist’s studio.
Randy Raines comes from a creative family. His father, Montana artist Bill Raines, was known for his life-size sculptures. Randy took that same artistic talent and found his own way to create something people can wear every day.
To him, every custom felt hat is more than a product. It’s a piece of art that becomes part of the person wearing it.
More Than Just Black and Brown
Many people think cowboy hats only come in a few colors and styles.
That’s far from the truth.
At Law Dog Hat Company, customers can choose from many different colors, brim widths, crown heights, and custom shapes. Whether you want a classic ranch hat, a wide-brim western hat, or something completely unique, Randy can build it.
One of the most eye-catching hats in the shop is a bright purple top hat made for a musician who never came back to pick it up. Today, it’s one of the most tried-on hats in the store.
How a Handcrafted Cowboy Hat Is Made
Every custom hat begins with a raw felt hat body, sometimes called a hat blank.
From there, Randy carefully transforms it into a finished cowboy hat by hand.
The process includes:
- Steaming the felt to soften it.
- Blocking the hat to the correct size.
- Flattening and trimming the brim.
- Sanding the felt until it’s smooth.
- Adding stiffener for strength.
- Shaping the crown and brim by hand.
Even though the video shows a faster demonstration, making a handcrafted cowboy hat usually takes about half a day.
Every step matters.
The Secret to the Perfect Hat Fit
One of the biggest reasons people choose a custom cowboy hat is comfort.
Not every head is shaped the same. Some people have round heads, while others have long oval or uneven head shapes. That’s why many store-bought hats never fit quite right.
Randy has spent decades learning how to spot these differences. Using nothing more than a cloth tape measure and years of experience, he shapes each hat so it sits straight and feels comfortable.
For many customers, it’s the first cowboy hat they’ve ever owned that truly fits.
Recreating Famous Western Movie Hats
Have you ever wanted the cowboy hat from your favorite Western movie?
Randy can often recreate it.
He studies scenes from classic Western films, pauses on the perfect frame, and carefully matches the crown, brim, and overall style.
His shop reflects that passion. Vintage Western movie posters decorate the walls, and classic Westerns often play on the television while he works.
A Shop Filled with Craftsmanship
Hat making isn’t Randy’s only talent.
He also builds much of the rustic furniture and wood frames found throughout the shop. When he couldn’t find furniture that matched his vision, he simply built it himself.
That same attention to detail shows up in every custom cowboy hat he makes.
Custom Hats for Customers Across the Country
While many people visit the Billings shop in person, plenty of customers order their custom hats over the phone or online.
No matter how someone places an order, the goal stays the same:
Create a handcrafted cowboy hat that fits perfectly, looks great, and makes the customer happy.
Experience the Art of Custom Hat Making
Making a custom cowboy hat takes skill, patience, and years of experience. Every hat is shaped by hand and built for the person who will wear it.
